We were appointed by Merlin Entertainments Plc as architects and interior designers on the new 61 bedroom LEGOLAND Castle Hotel and existing hotel extension works at the Windsor Resort.
As part of these works, we developed a fully bespoke cladding system from glass reinforced concrete sandwich panels. The cladding gives the impression that the hotel has been constructed of 25x scale LEGO bricks.
We worked closely with the Merlin delivery team and staff in the existing hotel to ensure that the proposed building would achieve the expectations and aspirations of all project stakeholders, offering our hotel design experience to a client relatively new to the hotel sector.
A unique challenge was presented in the co-ordination of construction and artistic consultants and a complex planning application. The typical bedroom layouts were rationalised, joinery was reviewed and reworked and considerations were taken not just on children’s enjoyment of the rooms but adult’s too.
Through upgrading the existing hotel’s check in and commercial facilities and centralising deliveries and staff movement, we were able to improve the operational facilities between the existing hotel and resort, optimising the limited amount of space and improving guest and staff circulation. We also oversaw the retrofit of two new lifts and the extension of the existing bar and restaurant area to take on the additional capacity of the new hotel.
Work on site started in June 2016. The hotel was completed and opened to guests in June 2017.
